Volunteer for Equal Voting Rights on MLK Day

  • Oregon Convention Center (Portland) & other locations (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Equal voting rights form the foundation of democracy. Honor Martin Luther King, Jr. by collecting IP-26 petition signatures (and recruiting additional volunteers). Our main focus will be the annual Skanner Foundation Breakfast, 8:00 - noon at the Oregon Convention Center (the breakfast is 8:30-10:30am - you are welcome to buy a ticket and attend). Meet there at 8:00am if you are able (north entrance). We will provide handouts and petitions.

If you can’t joins us there, try collecting signatures on your own on Trimet trains around Portland, from friends and neighbors, or wherever you feel comfortable.

If you canvass on your own, download and print at least three volunteer packets at https://www.alloregonvotes.org/petition (one for you and two to hand out to new volunteers). Print at least one additional petition sheet for each hour you will spend collecting signatures. Text, email, or call me if you need petitions delivered to you. Please send in signed petitions promptly to the address on the back of the sheet.

RSVP to Robert at (503)593-0734 or rclose@alloregonvotes.org. Please let me know if you plan to collect signatures anywhere. Future activities are contingent upon good volunteer support.

“So long as I do not firmly and irrevocably possess the right to vote, I do not possess myself. I cannot make up my mind – it is made up for me. I cannot live as a democratic citizen, observing the laws I have helped to enact – I can only submit to the edict of others.” - Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., “Give Us the Ballot” (1957).

“Voters First” Town Hall to mark Oregon’s 164th birthday, discuss critical questions of political dysfunction in government

On the eve of Oregon’s anniversary of statehood, Oregonians from across the political spectrum will gather to share the policy proposals that put voters first. The media is encouraged to attend this 2023 Community Town Hall Zoom event: Oregon Voters First, presented by All Oregon Votes.

As principled citizens and residents of Oregon we are called to unite behind exciting plans to restore integrity in elections and revitalize our compromised governance structures. Topics of discussion will be the solutions to increase the voice of voters’ interests over special interest and create government that’s “by the people, for the people,” such as open primaries, anti-gerrymandering, instant-runoff voting, campaign finance limits and more.

Thought-leaders and pro-democracy panelists will include:

  • Larry Morgan, former Director of Citizen Engagement and Inclusion, Oregon Secretary of State

  • Dr. Sondra Cosgrove, Professor of History and Executive Director Vote Nevada

  • Marty Wilde, Oregon State Representative 2018-2022

  • Dr. Alan Zundel, political scientist and electoral reform expert

  • Sass, Equal Vote Coalition Operations

The Economist rates the United States of America as a flawed democracy—ranked 25th in the world. We gather to support solutions that will restore American democracy and protect our shared future.

FACTSHEET:

  • Just 8% of Americans elect 83% of Congress — a staggering 359 of 435 U.S. House seats — effectively decided in primaries.

  • Only 23% of Oregonians believe we should allow voting restrictions with closed primaries. (OVBC Oct. 2022 Study)

  • In the 2022 primary, a record 87.7% of eligible Oregon voters did not voice support for either party’s gubernatorial candidate.

  • Denied voting rights are 1.2 million Oregonians; right now 42% of eligible voters are independents and face voting restrictions.
